We didnt have that in our day - Yes you did
I heard the conservation many times. We didn’t have that in our day. This social media has caused all this. We didn’t have fake news and bad attitudes and poor manners.
Unfortunately, you, we, us did. It wasn’t as widespread, but it was there. It has only grown.
People forget. Ann Landers and the columns where people aired out their problems in the newspapers. They forgot about gossip columns in newspapers. They were actually titled gossip. People forget about party lines and listening in. People forgot about the church, court house, quilting circles and other venues of conversation. People forget that they didn’t have a lot of time at work to be on social media and making videos. Conversations were held while working. They forgot that most people didn’t want to discuss politics and religion at work.
People forget that much of what wasn’t there actually was. It was handled different.
They all talked about other people, formulated their own ideas of truth, false hoods and sometimes set the story straight.
They forgot about judgement on the neighbors. They forget about criticizing those who helped around the county more than anyone.
They forget that during those times, gossip, falsehoods and provoking was looked down on. Mnay times dealt with fairly harse and quickly.
It’s always been there, just today it is at a much larger level than ever before.
A man once told me a story about him and his brother, over his mother’s cooking, during a family get together. His brother told him that mom’s biscuits had gotten smaller. He said no they haven’t. His brother said mom used to cook more for the table. He said no, Mom’s cooking hasn’t changed one bit. The brother said yes it has. I used to hold her biscuit, and it filled my hand. The older brother told him, no. You got bigger. Mom still uses the same cup to cut out the biscuits. Your hand got bigger. Your appetite got bigger, and you eat more. She still uses the same pots, pans, oven and stove. Same quantities. That is the same size biscuit as it ever was, your paw is just three times bigger than back then. You forget that you changed, not her.
At end of day, many things have always been there, we have changed in how we deal with them and view them.
