Why do Veterans either love or hate the Outdoors

For many there isn't very much of an inbetween. Probably because the largest part of the life is outdoors. It varies from flying to humping rucks all day. Living in fox holes, digging holes, trudging thru mud, wading thru creeks, deling with sand, rashes, bugs, snakes, climbing mountains, snow skis with rucks, rappelling and I could go on. Add some bullets, bombs, tense days and you could go either way.

But there is also the scenery and many places that the average joe doesnt ever see. For heights and angles that no one else gets to see. Animals in complete wilderness.

Maybe it becomes burn out for some. Others decide RV is best, many still love the solitude  and life of the outdoors. Finally getting to enjoy it without government gear and oversite.

Many different reasons, but seeems like once mustered out, many things that were hobbies, enjoyable and generally part of life changes. It goes from being not so enjoyable to greatest thing ever or just the opposite. just dont want to do it anymore.

In some cases it is a reminder of what was and cant be anymore. Take Mountain biking. Someone who was balls to the wall and lived to shred, all of the sudden, can't make it up a hill, cant hardly get on a bike, suffers in so much pain at every bump. They just decide to avoid the entire lifestyle or activity. Anything else just doesnt cut the mustard so to speak.

When dealing with veterans that have walked away from hobbies, outdoors or they have become completely knee deep in it. Try to find out why, understand the need for or they distaste for the activity.
